In the book of Ezra, we find a powerful account of God’s people returning to the land of Judah after exile. Approximately 40,000 of the people of Judah had come back, rebuilt the altar, and laid the foundation of the temple amid both rejoicing and weeping. Yet the work had stalled because of strong opposition. The people had stopped building, not because God had failed, but because they had begun listening to men rather than to God.

Today we look at how stalled obedience can turn into renewed progress through the power of God’s Word. When God’s word is obeyed again, God’s work begins again.

Listen Again to God’s Word (Ezra 5)

The prophets Haggai and Zechariah did not organise a strategy session or negotiate with the opposition. They simply declared the word of God. As soon as the people heard the message from the Lord, something changed. Zerubbabel and Jeshua rose up and began to build once more.

God’s word reawakened their responsibility. They had been passive, but now they became active. This is a powerful reminder for us today. Revival in our hearts does not begin when we hear something new. It begins when we obey what we already know.

Many of us have experienced seasons where our spiritual life was moving forward. Perhaps we were reading the Bible faithfully, praying with fire, or walking closely with the Lord. Then, for whatever reason, we drifted. A day was missed, then two, then the habit disappeared. We look back and wonder if we can ever pick up where we left off.

The answer is found right here. We must listen again to God’s word. Whether through preaching or personal devotions, the question we should ask is simple: “What shall we do?” (Acts 2:37, KJV). Writing down what God shows us through a simple method such as Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer (SOAP) can help turn hearing into doing. The key is not merely to read, but to respond with a clear call to action.

Step Forward in Obedience to God’s Word (Ezra 5:3)

As soon as the people began to obey God’s word and rebuild the temple, opposition returned. Yet they did not stop. They stepped forward in obedience despite the resistance.

Opposition is not a sign that we are outside God’s will. In fact, the Lord Jesus told His disciples, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, KJV). No person, no circumstance, and no power on earth is strong enough to prevent God from accomplishing His purposes in our lives when we walk in obedience.

Whether the challenge is a difficult marriage, wayward children, pressure at work, or a stalled spiritual habit, the solution remains the same. Step forward in obedience to what God has already said in His word. Honour your parents, forgive those who have hurt you, make restitution where needed, or put away that habit that is destroying your family. God is able to open doors that no one can shut when we choose obedience.

Rejoice in the Completion God Brings Through His Word (Ezra 6)

And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king. And the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy. (Ezra 6:14-16, KJV)

What began with stalled work and opposition ended in joyful dedication. Remarkably, the very empire that had once halted the project now funded its completion. The people offered sacrifices and celebrated with joy, not because life had become easy, but because they had obeyed God.

Joy grows where obedience lives. When we resist the Holy Spirit and ignore God’s word, joy fades. But when we yield to the Spirit by applying the Scriptures to our daily lives, joy returns as a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, KJV).

One man who had drifted spiritually for years returned to the Lord through simple daily obedience: consistent time in Scripture, restored family priorities, and renewed involvement in church. He later said, “I did not realise how empty I had been until joy came back.”

Conclusion

The story of Ezra chapters 5 and 6 is a comeback story. It is not about human effort, clever strategies, or powerful personalities. It is about ordinary people who heard God’s word, stepped forward in obedience, and watched God bring the work to joyful completion.

Whatever has stalled in your life today, whether in your walk with God, your family, your church, or a personal project, a fresh start is possible. Come face to face with God’s word. Ask the Lord what He wants you to do, and then do it. When God’s word is obeyed again, God’s work begins again, and it ends in joy.

If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, today is the day to call upon Him. When you receive Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to live within you and makes God’s word come alive. For those who already know the Lord, let this be the moment you recommit to simple, consistent obedience.
