In Ezra chapter 7 we meet a man whose life demonstrated the power of a heart fully prepared by the Word of God. The temple had been rebuilt and dedicated, yet the greater work of God was about to begin through the teaching and leadership of Ezra. Pastor Léveillé unpacks this passage to show that every believer can experience the good hand of the Lord upon their lives. Whether in the home, the workplace, the neighbourhood, or the church, effectiveness flows from an internal work that God does first.

Set Your Heart on God’s Word Before You Seek Anything Else

The phrase “for” in verse 10 explains why the good hand of the Lord rested upon Ezra. He did not stumble into usefulness or rely on personality, training, or connections. Instead, he made an intentional decision to fix his heart on the law of the Lord before he ever set his hands to any task.

Being always precedes doing. Ezra was not sitting in Babylon plotting a career path built on charisma. He chose what God had said as his first priority. The same choice is open to every believer today. The Lord Jesus taught, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21, KJV). If our hearts are not aligned with Scripture, our efforts will drift off course.

Pastor Léveillé illustrated this truth with a memory from his teenage years at the family cottage in Sweden. The motor on the rowboat was slightly off centre, so steering required constant correction. A misaligned heart produces the same result in life. No amount of outward activity can compensate for an inward misalignment. Whether we are parents, spouses, employees, or church servants, we must first yield our affections and priorities to the Lord. Only then will we be positioned for the hand of God to rest upon us.

Seek to Understand God’s Word Until It Shapes You

Ezra was described as “a ready scribe in the law of Moses.” The word “ready” means he was skilled, proficient, and practised. He did not merely read the Scriptures for information; he laboured in them until they transformed him.

Many people accumulate biblical knowledge yet show little fruit. Information without application can actually harden the heart. The apostle Paul instructed Timothy, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV). The goal is not to impress others but to be approved by God.

Jesus did not come merely to inform us. He came to transform us from the inside out. Pastor Léveillé recalled the life of Robert Murray McCheyne, who, after the death of his older brother, began searching the Scriptures with fresh intensity. When McCheyne preached, the Word did not simply flow from his notes; it flowed from a heart that had been changed by it. The same invitation is extended to us. We are to read the Bible expecting the Holy Spirit to convict, correct, and conform us to the image of Christ.

Live and Teach God’s Word So Others Can See God’s Hand

Ezra’s preparation followed a clear progression: he prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments. He lived what he taught.

A life that embodies truth carries unique power. James 1:22 commands, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.” Jesus declared, “Whosoever therefore shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:19, KJV). Joshua’s success came from the same pattern. God told him, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein” (Joshua 1:8, KJV).

Our lives teach every day. Grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and neighbours all communicate messages through their choices. Pastor Léveillé shared how his maternal grandparents modelled wholehearted service to the Lord, while other influences pointed in different directions. The children in his family still remember his mother-in-law’s faithful prayers in difficult moments. When God’s Word works deeply within us, it naturally works through us to touch those around us.

Conclusion

The hand of God is not reserved for the extraordinary or the highly educated. It rests upon ordinary people whose hearts have been prepared by His Word. Ezra did not drift into godliness; he chose it. The same choice stands before each of us today.

If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, the invitation is open right now. Turn from self-reliance and receive the forgiveness He offers. For those who are already believers, examine your heart. Are you setting it on Scripture first? Are you allowing the Word to shape you? Are you living and teaching it so others see God’s hand at work?

The God who placed His hand upon Ezra is ready to place His hand upon your life. Prepare your heart today, and watch Him do what only He can do through you.
