At FaithWay Baptist Church, we recently celebrated the hard work of our students, teachers, and parents during a special evening honouring academic achievements. However, as Pastor Léveillé reminded us in his sermon from Mark 10:13-24, life’s greatest lessons extend far beyond the classroom. Titled “More Than a Report Card,” this message draws from Jesus’ teachings to emphasize what truly matters: knowing and trusting Christ. Through the stories of Jesus welcoming children and the rich young ruler, we uncover timeless truths about faith, priorities, and the eternal impact of guiding young hearts toward God.

Jesus Welcomes Children (Mark 10:13-14)

In Mark 10:13-14, we see a beautiful moment where Jesus rebukes His disciples for trying to shoo away children brought to Him for a blessing. Far from being a distraction, Jesus declares, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” This powerful statement reveals Christ’s heart for children. They are not second-class citizens in God’s kingdom but precious examples of it. At FaithWay Baptist School, we echo this truth by partnering with Christian homes to nurture children, not just academically but spiritually. Parents are encouraged to teach their children what truly counts, not just how to count. While academic success is valuable, as Proverbs 4:7 reminds us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom,” only Jesus can open the doors to true life and eternal hope. A diploma may open earthly opportunities, but only Christ opens heaven.

Faith Isn’t Complicated – Children Get It (Mark 10:15, 17-24)

Jesus continues in Mark 10:15, saying, “Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will not enter it.” This simple yet profound statement contrasts with the story of the rich young ruler in verses 17-24. This man, wealthy, educated, and moral, approaches Jesus asking, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus lists the commandments, and the man confidently claims he has kept them all. Yet, when Jesus challenges him to sell his possessions and follow Him, the man walks away sorrowful, unable to let go of his wealth. His story illustrates a critical truth: faith is not about earning salvation through good deeds or accomplishments. Like a child who trusts a teacher’s words without debate, we are called to trust Jesus with simple, childlike faith. Proverbs 1:7 states, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,” and 2 Timothy 3:15 reminds us that Scripture makes us “wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” No degree or achievement can redeem a soul, only faith in Christ can.

Jesus Blesses Those Who Come (Mark 10:16)

In Mark 10:16, Jesus takes the children in His arms, places His hands on them, and blesses them. This tender act shows that Jesus not only welcomes but blesses all who come to Him. As Pastor Léveillé shared, “Jesus says, ‘He that comes to me I will in no wise cast out.’” At FaithWay Baptist School, our mission is to be a blessing to students, families, and teachers by fostering an environment where children encounter Christ’s love through truth, prayer, and godly examples. Parents are urged to guide their children’s steps, as Psalm 119:133 prays, “Order my steps in thy word.” The sermon highlighted Susanna Wesley, mother of 19 children, including John and Charles Wesley, who shaped history through their faith. Despite a chaotic household, Susanna prioritized prayer and taught her children to know Jesus. Her example challenges us to raise children who not only succeed in life but thrive in faith, ensuring they are prepared not just for graduation but for glory.

Conclusion

The celebration of academic achievements is a joyful moment, but as Pastor Léveillé emphasized, there is something far greater than grades or awards: knowing Jesus Christ. Parents and educators are called to shepherd young hearts toward simple, childlike faith, teaching them not just to make a living but to live for Christ. Let us commit to being God’s hands and feet, blessing our children with love, truth, and a legacy of faith that echoes into eternity. If you have never trusted Jesus as your Savior, today is the day to come to Him with childlike faith, recognizing that He alone can forgive sin and grant eternal life.
