Life is often measured by milestones and routines, but as believers, we are called to move beyond the mundane and live with a divine sense of direction. In this message, Pastor Jeff Reason challenges us to look beyond our daily tasks and seek a purpose that is authored by God Himself. By examining the transformation described in the Psalms, we see that a life anchored in Christ is one of constant renewal, where our past struggles become the platform for a powerful testimony. Whether you are just beginning your journey or have walked with the Lord for decades, there is a specific work He has for you to accomplish today.

An Invitation to Walk with Intention

What is your purpose for living right now? Whether you are a child, a teenager, a student, or someone in the later chapters of life, this question remains the most vital one you will ever answer. It is easy to fall into a routine where the things important to God gradually lose their priority in our hearts, allowing the world to take over our thoughts. However, God desires to give every believer a specific purpose that transcends their daily job or circumstances. When a heart is gripped by a divine calling, it changes how we talk, how we walk, and how we interact with every person we meet.

A New Song and a New Direction

In Psalm 40, the psalmist describes being brought up out of a “horrible pit” and the “miry clay”. This is not just a poetic sentiment but a literal transformation where God sets our feet upon a rock and establishes our goings. When we wait patiently for the Lord, He puts a new song in our mouth, even praise unto our God. This new song is meant to be heard outside the walls of the church. As others see the change in our lives, they are drawn to the awe of the One who gave us that song, leading many to trust in the Lord.

The Ministry of Generations

Our purpose is not for ourselves alone; it is a “gospel torch” that must be passed from one generation to the next. Asaph reminds us in Psalm 78 that God established a testimony and a law which He commanded our fathers to make known to their children. We have a responsibility to live in such a way that the generation to come might know the truths of God. If we fail to pass on what it means to walk with and learn from the Lord, we risk seeing a massive spiritual decline in just one generation. Our goal is to ensure that our children, and their children after them, might set their hope in God and not forget His works.

Showing the Praises and Strength of the Lord

A God-given purpose manifests in three specific ways. First, we must show the praises of the Lord by telling others of His faithfulness. Instead of becoming a complaining people, we should share how God has sustained us through trials and disappointments. Second, we show the strength of the Lord. By being honest about our fears and weaknesses, we point others to the God who is a “strong hold in the day of trouble”. Finally, we show the wonderful works of the Lord by testifying of answered prayers and His protection over our lives.

Finishing the Race with Faithfulness

For those in the later stages of life, the Bible offers a beautiful promise that the righteous shall still bring forth fruit in old age. There is no retirement from God’s service; rather, it is a time to stay vigorous, satisfied, and flourishing in the courts of our God. Whether you are a prayer warrior, an encourager, or a mentor to the youth, your calling remains vital. By staying focused on the Lord until the very end, we provide a testimony of a life well-lived, proving to the world that God is a rock and a fortress from our youth even until our final breath.

Conclusion

Living with a God-given purpose is the difference between simply going through the motions and experiencing a life of true impact. When we delight to do His will and keep His law within our hearts, our lives become a living testimony of His saving grace. May we all seek the Lord’s face today and ask Him to renew our sense of mission. Let us be a people on fire, reaching our communities and families with the message of the Lord Jesus Christ until He comes again.
