Pastor Tyler Gillett challenges believers to pursue a life marked by unwavering commitment to Christ. Drawing from the words of Jesus to the church in Smyrna, this sermon reminds us that true success in the Christian life is not measured by worldly achievements but by faithfulness. As we navigate trials and uncertainties, the call remains clear: remain steadfast until the end.

Faithful Christians Will Face Tribulation

The church in Smyrna stands out in the book of Revelation as one for which the Lord Jesus had only words of commendation and no correction. Jesus knew their works, their tribulation, and their poverty, yet He declared them rich. Smyrna was a prosperous city, but these believers faced deep poverty and persecution because they refused to declare “Caesar is Lord.” Their faithfulness to Christ cost them dearly in the eyes of the world.

Pastor Gillett emphasises that this reality extends to every generation. All who live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. Tribulation is not a possibility but a certainty for those who remain faithful. Believers should not be surprised by fiery trials, as the apostle Peter warned, nor should they view them as strange. Instead, expect them and enlist them for God’s glory. The sermon shares personal stories and illustrations, including the idea that suffering should never catch us off guard like an unexpected party. A working and labouring church like Faithway Baptist still encounters hardship, but Jesus sees the true riches of a faithful heart.

Faithful Christians Will Overcome Tribulation

Jesus commands the church, “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer.” Overcomers do not live in fear of economic downturns, opposition, or launching out in faith for God. They recognise the source of their trials: the devil, who seeks to cast some into prison to test them. Yet Satan is a lion on a leash, limited by God’s sovereign permission.

Trials serve as tests, not punishments, when we walk rightly with God. Satan aims to destroy faith through them, but God uses the same trials to develop and purify faith, much like fire refines gold by removing dross. The message recounts personal seasons of intense testing, including church challenges, loss, and health struggles, where God’s presence brought peace amid darkness. Overcomers understand that every trial has an expiration date, limited by God, and they resolve to remain faithful even unto death. The sermon highlights Paul’s determination to finish his course with joy and David’s comfort in the valley because the Shepherd is present.

Faithful Christians Will Receive a Reward

The promise is profound: “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” After tribulation comes reward. The worst the world can do, taking our physical life, becomes the best outcome for the believer, ushering us into the presence of Christ. Faithful Christians focus on eternity, knowing that whether we live or die, we win in Christ.

The sermon points to the example of Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna decades later, who faced martyrdom with courage and grace, refusing to deny his Saviour after 86 years of service. His faithfulness echoes through church history. Paul looked forward to his crown of righteousness, living for “that day” when the righteous Judge would reward him. Our payday comes at the end of life, at the feet of the One who was faithful unto death for us.

Conclusion

This message from Revelation calls every believer, pastor, missionary, student, and layperson alike to make faithfulness the ambition of their life. Success may be elusive and safety may feel comfortable, but faithfulness endures. Recommit today to serve Christ with spirit-filled excellence until your last breath. Whether in small daily choices or great trials, determine to hear “Well done” from the Saviour. May we all echo the resolve of those graduates in India: “I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back.”
